"You could not possibly do such a thing: to kill the righteous with the wicket, treating the righteous and the wicked alike. You could not possibly do that! Won't the Judge of all the earth do what is just?"
Genesis 18:25
This is one of those things that makes me wonder - just how many righteous people are there in the world? I'd say there's only ever been one truly righteous man - Jesus - who doesn't deserve to be wiped off the face of the planet. All men sin. All men are deserving of the wages of sin - death.
On the other hand, there are many who find favor with the Lord, despite our wickedness. Otherwise, none of us would ever be able to with Him. Belief and repentance - these are the necessary ingredients for a "righteous" life. How many in Sodom will God find who fit these qualities?
Abraham convinces God not to destroy Sodom as long as He can find 10 righteous people. God listens to Abraham's plea for the righteous, and agrees that He will spare the whole city on account of the 10, if there are 10 present. It's interesting how Abraham started with 50, then brought his number down in increments of 5 or 10 until the final number of 10. Each time, he asks the Lord not to be angry with him for speaking further. I wonder how low God would have allowed him to go. Why didn't Abraham take it down to 1?
