"They replied, 'We have clearly seen how the Lord has been with you. We think there should be an oath between two parties - between us and you. Let us make a covenant with you.'"

Abimelech sees how Isaac is blessed by God, and makes a peace treaty with him because he's afraid of how powerful Isaac is becoming. Already, the Lord's promise to Abraham is being fulfilled, as his son's household is greater than the nation of the Philistines.
