"Consecrate every firstborn male to Me, the firstborn from every womb among the Israelites, both man and animal; it is Mine."
Exodus 13:2
Because God did not take their lives at the Passover, He demands that they be redeemed for Him in life. They belong to Him. Truthfully, all of Israel (and really all of humanity) belongs to Him. However, He makes this distinction about firstborn sons because He saved their lives.
This concept is actually quite common across many cultures, that you owe your life to the person who has saved you from death. Sometimes, this is taken to the point of complete slavery, but usually it's more like owing a favor that you can never repay. In this case, as in the case of Jesus dying for our sins, God demands redemption from those He saved. Clean living, according to His Law. Righteousness.
Question: How do you repay God for rescuing your life?
