Deuteronomy 1: Appointed by Divine Right

"The Lord was angry with me also because of you and said: 'You will not enter there either.  Joshua son of Nun, who attends you, will enter it.  Encourage him, for he will enable Israel to inherit it.'"
Deuteronomy 1:37-38

Moses is recalling the incident when the Israelites sent spies to view the Promised Land, and only two of the spies believed the Lord could overcome the Canaanite "giants".  He is reminding the people that he can't enter the land with them.  He is setting Joshua up to be his successor as leader of the Israelites, just as God commanded him to do.

Wouldn't it be nice if leadership in all nations was handed down by divine authority?  Israel didn't have a democracy by any means, but the people of Israel followed Moses and Aaron because of their closeness to God and His wise counsel.  Also, these men had earned respect for their honest actions and clear goals for the prosperity of their nation.

Imagine how easy choosing our elected officials would be if there was a pillar of fire following one of them around and talking to them...

Question of the Day:
Are you fed-up with the mismanagement of our government?  What can you do to solve the problem?

Prayer of the Day:
Lord, help me to get involved in my nations affairs in a meaningful way, through discussion, instruction, and wise decisions.  Help our nation stay great by stirring the hearts of voters and by calling truly great men and women to serve in the three branches of our federal government (and the states and local governments as well, for that matter).  Amen.
