Deuteronomy 3: Praise or Attempted Flattery?

"Lord God, You have begun to show Your greatness and power to Your servant, for what god is there in heaven or on earth who can perform deeds and mighty acts like Yours?"
Deuteronomy 3:24

At first glance, this seems like high praise.  However, we see that this passage is just Moses's way of leading up to a question which God has already answered.  He is trying to flatter God into allowing him to enter the Promised Land, which was previously denied to him by God after Moses failed to follow His instructions in the wilderness.  Two verses later, we see that the Lord is angry with Moses.

Question of the Day:
How often do we think we are praising the Lord, while in truth we are only trying to butter Him up for the part of our prayer where we ask Him for all the things we want?  How can we stay away from flattery and truly praise the name of the Lord?

Prayer of the Day:
Lord, You have removed from me the burden of sin!  You have freed me from the death that awaits all mankind!  Your grace alone has Saved me!  I know that I am unworthy, and that only through Your continued good works within me can keep me on the right path.  Fill me with Your Spirit, so that the good works You started within me may continue.  Amen.
