"Everyone who saw it said, 'Nothing like this has ever happened or been seen since the day the Israelites came out of the land of Egypt to this day. Think it over, discuss it, and speak up!'"
Judges 19:30
A man's concubine was unfaithful to him and then she went back to live at her father's house. The husband went to Bethlehem to find her, speak kindly to her, and bring her back home. On the journey home, they stopped in Gibeah (a town of Benjaminites) and stayed in the home of a generous local man.
Before dark, the perverted men of the town came mobbing to the house, wanting to have sex with the unknown man. Instead, they end up raping his concubine all through the night and leaving her dead at the doorstep when the sun rose. The man cut her into 12 pieces and sent her to the 12 tribes, opening their eyes to the depths they had fallen to as a nation. His message shook the hearts of God's people, who remembered their heritage and spoke out against this atrocity.
Question of the Day:
What kind of vile act would it take to shock you out of your complacency with what you've become? Are you willing to stand up and speak out against evil before such an atrocity is allowed to occur?
Prayer of the Day:
Lord, do not let me be complacent with the horrors around me. Spark a fire within me which will speak out against all sin, no matter how small it may seem. Strike first at the sin in my own heart so that my hatred towards sin will not be hypocritical. Amen.
