1 Samuel 11: What Makes a Great Leader?

"Afterwards, the people said to Samuel, 'Who said that Saul should not reign over us?  Give us those men so we can kill them!'  But Saul ordered, 'No one will be executed this day, for today the Lord has provided deliverance in Israel.'"
1 Samuel 11:12-13

Saul leads the men of Israel against the Ammonites, who had overtaken Jabesh-gilead.  After his massive victory, the people are ready to kill everyone who ever spoke out against Saul.  They rage at Samuel, who had warned against raising Saul up as king.  But what does Saul think about all this?

Saul knows who the glory really belongs to, and he stands up for the truth.  With one smooth remark, he turns the frenzied people back to sanity and prevents them from doing evil.  He leads by example, showing humility when everyone else is praising him.  His kingship gets off to a flawless start because he approaches his rule with the heart of a servant.

Question of the Day:
What leadership roles do you play?  Do you lead your friends, family, coworkers, others?  How do you lead them?  Do you lead with humility and grace?  Do you lead by example?  Do you lead by serving?

Prayer of the Day:
Lord, mold my heart into that of a servant.  Help me to focus on the needs of others before myself, and help me to act always in a way that sets a positive example for those around me, whether I know that I'm leading them or not.  Amen.
