Numbers 11: Overactive Dependence vs. Humility

"You will eat, not for one day, or two days, or five days, or 10 days, or 20 days, but for a whole month - until it comes out of your nostrils and becomes nauseating to you - because you have rejected the Lord who is among you, and cried to Him: 'Why did we ever leave Egypt?'"
Numbers 11:19-20

This is a striking contrast to previous times of complaint.  When the Israelites were fresh out of Egypt, we read about a lot of complaining that was answered more kindly.  Complaints about thirst led to miracles such as the cleansing of a bitter oasis and fresh water spewing forth from a split rock.  Complaints about hunger led to daily manna deposits on the ground for the Israelites to eat.

Now, the people of Israel are complaining that their manna is not as good as what they had in Egypt.  Some are even saying they'd rather go back to the slavery they endured in Egypt if only they could have their fresh fish, melons, etc.  God is irate with His people for this.

We see the same phenomenon happening in our own country today.  The people are given government incentives such as welfare, tax cuts, etc.  The very same people who receive these benefits are the ones who cry out for more.  They have a learned dependence, and are unable to fend for themselves, yet they have ever-growing appetites.  Our government can only give out so much before it goes bankrupt...

Ultimately, the Lord does desire for us to be dependent on Him, but He also desires for us to understand that simply being in His presence is all the sustenance we need.

Question of the Day:
Are you content with the blessings the Lord has given you, or do you constantly beg for more?

Prayer of the Day:
Thank You for Your beautiful presence in my life.  I am unworthy of this, and of all the countless blessings You have given me.  I can never repay You enough for my blessed life.  I humbly bow before You and give You my all, and ask that You would use me as a blessing among Your house.  Amen.
