"'Suppose we do go,' Saul said to his attendant, 'what do we take the man? The food from our packs is gone, and there's no gift to take to the man of God. What do we have?'"
1 Samuel 9:7
While Saul is out searching for his father's flocks, he and his attendant come upon the town in which Samuel is preparing to speak. Saul shows humility by declaring that he has no gift to offer the prophet. Because of this, he doesn't want to ask the man of God for help.
Which is more important - asking for God's direction or bringing God a gift when you call on Him? We've read many instances in which one or both of these have been important topics, but how do we decide between the two?
Ultimately, there's one answer that most people overlook - neither is more important because they are both commands directly from God, and therefore they both must be fulfilled. We are all Called to seek the Lord's guidance, and we are all Called to bring pleasing gifts to the Lord when we meet with Him. So what are we to do when we have no suitable gift, but are still Called into His presence?
Give yourself.
Saul was Called into service as Israel's king.
Question of the Day:
What are you being Called into service to do? Will you give yourself to God in service and seek after His guidance? Will you let Him lead you and show you how to lead others?
Prayer of the Day:
Father give me the strength to be everything I'm Called to be. Father, show me the way to lead them. Won't you lead me to lead them with strong hands, to stand up when they can't? I don't want to leave them hungry for love, chasing things that I could give up. I'll show them I'm willing to fight, and give them the best of my life, so we can call this a home. Lead me, 'cause I can't do this alone. Amen.
