"'If the Arameans are too strong for me,' Joab said, 'then you will be my help. However, if the Ammonites are too strong for you, I'll come to help you.'"
2 Samuel 10:11
When the king of the Ammonites realized that he had upset king David of Israel, he hired an army. Because he hired this army, king David sent troops to attack. The Arameans took this opportunity to join with the Ammonites, and they ambushed the army of Israel. The Ammonites were on one side, the Arameans on the other, and Joab with his troops in the middle. He split his forces: the elite soldiers with himself against the Arameans, and the rest with his brother Abishai against the Ammonites.
Question of the Day:
What made this plan successful? Was it the fact that the elite soldiers overpowered the Arameans, causing the Ammonites to flee as well? Or was it the fact that these men were ready to sacrifice themselves for one another instead of saving their own skins? The promise of aid raised the morale of both halves of the Israeli army enough to fend off a two-front battle against superior numbers.
Prayer of the Day:
Lord, give me a heart of helpfulness. Do not let me ignore others' needs, but let me put them above my own. Teach me to selflessly offer aid to those in need around me, regardless of whether or not they are close to me. Help me to be the 'good Samaritan', a good neighbor to all. Amen.
