"So the king asked, 'Is there anyone left of Saul's family I can show the kindness of God to?'"
2 Samuel 9:3a
I find it interesting that David refers here to the kindness of God. At first, he asks if he can show kindness to them because of Jonathan (Saul's eldest son, who had been loyal to David). Certainly, the loyalty between the two of them is the reason why David wants to show Mephibosheth (Jonathan's son) kindness, but it's not his own kindness he wants to show. It's the Lord's.
Question of the Day:
What is the Lord's kindness? David provides Mephibosheth with all of his grandfather (Saul)'s lands and servants, and also brings the lame man to his own table for every meal. Is this the kindness of God? Sustenance, abundance, and protection from disaster?
Prayer of the Day:
Lord, show Your kindness to me so that I may show it to others. Lord, thank You for showing Your abundance to me so that I have been able to show it to others. I ask that You would continue to move me towards sharing Your kindness always, and never let me think it's mine to give. Amen.
